In America, the rise of child obesity has followed with the rise in popularity junk food has gained. The unhealthy choice has gained much controversy whether it should be sold in schools or not. In the past 50 years, the amount of overeight kids has grown by 500% and the amount of calories eaten has increased by 10%. In various articles written by the new york times upfront and medical daily, junk food is claimed as one of the worst things schools can sell. Junk food should not be sold in schools because it leads to junk food addiction, it is a waste of money, and it leads to future health issues. School cafeterias should not sell junk food because kids have started to become addicted to that type of food. As stated in source B, many public schools sell sugary drinks like lemonade and fruit punch, even coffee. As well as drinks, schools are also making it simple for kids to obtain candy and chips. When it comes to school parties, majority of the time you will see candy and chips being passed around while no real food is offered. This is important to note because without the real food, kids will have to go for the junk food. Schools are using kids that do not understand what they are eating or drinking in order to make a profit. This explains why schools that are under financial pressure are more likely to sell the unhealthy food. Throughout schools you can find vending machines filled with sugary drinks and candy. Though the school is making money, the sales of junk food in school has allowed kids to become addicted to junk food. Reasons for schools not to sell junk food is due to the waste of money. Schools conclude that schools that are under financial pressure are more likely to make junk food available to their students. It is a better attraction for the kids and it is something cheaper to afford. Although students manage to spend lots of money on varieties of junk food. Without any healthy food there is no other option for kids so they would not get attracted to any healthy foods and those are at higher price for schools to afford. The healthy choices are actually rarely the affordable choices. It costs the schools who have less money a lot to afford healthy food. What you will most likely see is junk food since it is easier to afford. So Schools have thought of a smart way of making money which is selling junk food because they know they will make more money off of that. Not only are kids addicted to junk food and waste money but junk food can cause future health issues. Junk food is not the only thing that can cause health issues, genetics can also cause health issues. Eating too much Junk food can cause more issues than genetics. For examples, “1/3 of kids born after the 2000 will develop diabetes,” this is states in source C. This quote shows that kids getting diabetes have increased. Also, more kids are eating junk food and for that reason kids are getting more health issues.” While the problem and the negative health consequences that policies try to address are real, the solutions offered are often based on nothing more than a hunch,” is stated in source D. Obesity is a real problem that has increased , and we do not have a real solution for it . The solutions offered have no evidence behind them to prove they really work. Obesity is a real problem that comes with health issues, wasting money, and being addicted to junk food. From this evidence, it is proven junk food should not be sold in schools. Junk food leads to kids addicted to it, the junk food is a waste of money and it leads to future health issues. This is significant to the present day because as children it is important to understand how different types of food can positively or negatively impact someone's life. When schools sell junk food in schools it allowed juveniles to easily obtain the unhealthy choice.
